What I wanted to do in rock 'n' roll was merge poetry with sonic scapes, and the two people who had contributed so much to that were Jimi Hendrix and Jim Morrison. . . . I don't think people then were motivated to get rich and famous. That came along, and it was "OK, we'll take it, baby." But those artists were driven to push envelopes, to create space. They had words and music, and they documented the times. Jimi Hendrix had hopes and dreams and started a new universal language. The cultural body of work of the Sixties is forever with us. We had Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Jefferson Airplane, Jim Morrison - it was a special time, like some Greek-god period. I like having heroes.
